Continue Dr. Thoman's legacy and support nursing students with financial need! <p><strong>Continue Dr. Thoman's legacy and support nursing students with financial need!</strong></p> Dr. Joan Thoman was an esteemed faculty member of Cleveland State University and the College of Nursing. She was most recently a tenured Associate Professor, an Accredited Provider Program Director for Continuing Education through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and Director of the Community Health Worker Program. She also served as an Instructor in classroom and clinical settings and as Associate Dean of Research and Collaborative Partnerships at CSU from 2018-2022. Dr. Thoman was recognized for her contributions to the field of nursing and community health through numerous awards throughout her lifetime, including the rank of emeritus faculty.  Dr. Thoman established the Dr. Joan Thoman Endowed Scholarship to help nursing students achieve their educational dreams. Dr. Thoman was a first-generation college student and had very minimal funds to pursue her education. This scholarship fund will continue her legacy by providing nursing students who have financial needs the opportunity to obtain their undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing. In addition, it will continue Dr. Thoman’s desire to help students pursue research and scholarly studies without fear and provide the means for them to be exposed to this type of work and research. Support scholarships for children in the foster care community! <p>Support scholarships for children in the foster care community! </p> Fostering the Future, a Be Best initiative, secures educational opportunities and scholarships for children in the foster care community. Scholarship recipients will learn in a supportive environment, gaining knowledge critical to realizing job security within the technology sector. By providing access to a computer science education, these individuals will be prepared to enter the workforce and ultimately reach financial independence. Many children in the foster care community lack the support and stability to finish their education and gain meaningful employment. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, only 50 percent of foster children finish high school, and only three percent of former foster children obtain a college degree. Twenty percent of the children in foster care will become homeless after aging out of the system, and only half will have gainful employment by the age of 24. Support the legacy of Valerie Hinton-Hannah!! <p>Support the legacy of Valerie Hinton-Hannah!!</p> <strong>MRS. VALERIE HINTON-HANNAH</strong> Mrs. Valerie Hinton-Hannah, Assistant Dean, Judicial Affairs Officer, and Director Student Conduct & Advocacy – retired on May 1, 2019, after 31 years of service to Cleveland State University. She passed away on December 23, 2021. Mrs. Hinton-Hannah started her career at Cleveland State University as an Academic Advisor in Trio/Special Studies and then became the Judicial Affairs Officer in the department of Student Life, a position she was very passionate about. Mrs. Hinton-Hannah was known across campus as the expert on how to aid in students’ success. Faculty, staff, and students often sought her out for advice and wisdom. Even after her retirement, she continued to be a resource to faculty and staff on campus. Under her leadership, the Office of Judicial Affairs fostered a campus community that provided students with the opportunity to reach their educational goals and a community that protected the health, safety, property, and human rights of students, faculty, and staff. Prior to Cleveland State, Mrs. Hinton-Hannah was a Clinical Social Worker. She was a double alum of Kent State University, receiving both her Bachelor’s in Social Work and a Master’s in Education. Mrs. Hinton-Hannah was a dedicated member and servant of Mt. Zion Oakwood Village Church. She was also a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; Alpha Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, and served on many committees and Sorority led programs at the local and regional level. At Cleveland State Mrs. Hinton-Hannah was advisor to the Sorority’s chapter on campus for many, many years up until her retirement. As a loving wife and doting mother, she created a home that was filled with love and support. She always dressed fashionably and in high heels. She was the epitome of class and grace.

Please consider supporting Tom's scholarship to help continue his legacy and provide opportunities to others! <p>Support the Tom Smolinski Diving Scholarship Endowed Fund! </p> The Tom Smolinski Diving Endowment was established after Tom Smolinski’s sudden passing in 2015.  Tom grew up in Boston, NY and went to Hamburg Schools outside of Buffalo. He was a great athlete. He was a varsity baseball player and diver. In fact, his diving record is still displayed at Hamburg High School to this day. Tom went on to Cleveland State and dove from 1997-1999 as an Academic All American. His team won championships both years.  After college, Tom returned home to Buffalo. Not long after graduation, he was in a car accident which resulted in paralysis. Although this was devastating and detoured his plans, he faced every challenge and obstacle. He pushed forward and showed amazing strength. Tom married in 2002 and began a family in 2008. He became the loving father of twin girls, Bella and Jenna. Much of him can be seen in them. We lost Tom on Father’s Day weekend in 2015 after injuries he sustained in another car accident. How much he is missed can never be measured, but his family and friends continue to honor him and move forward.  Establishing the Tom Smolinski Diving Endowment has provided not only an opportunity for others to go on and dive in college like he did, but it carries on his legacy. Tom was an amazing husband, father, and friend to many. He was an avid sports fan and loved his Buffalo teams, along with his Cleveland Guardians.  His humor kept you laughing and his quick wit kept you on your toes.  As his former teammate Bogdan Kozul once wrote, “It was an honor to dive with Tom Smolinski at Cleveland State University. He was a great diver that kept us entertained and focused. We showed up every day because as a teammate, Tom made it fun and pushed us to be our best. Diving practice with Tom was a thrill all by itself. If you weren’t holding your head from a near concussion, you were holding your gut from laughing so hard at one of his jokes or stunts that he contrived for the sole purpose of distracting us from physical and mental anguish. Most of us would have loved to end the daily beatings inherent with the sport, but Tom would keep us from self-imploding at practice. Tom Smolinski was someone that was always there to pick us up and make us laugh. He never let us quit, teaching us how to be resilient – which made many of life’s daily beatings a little more manageable.” <em>- Bogdan Kozul, CSU ‘98</em> Bogdan’s words describe Tom so very well. Please consider a contribution to help grow the Finish Line endowed scholarship in support of well-qualified students in need. <p>Help students in need reach the finish line!</p> Administering the Washkewicz College of Engineering’s scholarships was among the many responsibilities of the college’s former Asst. Dean, Dr. Susan D. Carver.  She was particularly gratified when she could assist a student in good standing who was nearing “the finish line,” soon to graduate, but who was confronting economic hardship. Her stewardship of endowed funds often allowed her to help with a financial award that enabled that student to graduate. Students felt supported and valued by her willingness to listen to their needs and help with a solution, <strong><em>especially during their final semesters before graduation.</em></strong>  Many students were able to graduate and begin their professional careers as engineers, and data or computer scientists because of the monetary support.  Upon retirement in December 2024, Dr. Carver decided to create a scholarship to continue the much-appreciated support <strong>by establishing an endowed fund that would help the Washkewicz College of Engineering students make it to the <em>finish line. </em> </strong> <strong>Please consider a contribution to help grow the <em>Finish Line</em> endowed scholarship</strong> in support of well-qualified students in need. Honor Megan’s legacy by supporting hope and positive change through this scholarship! <p><span>Support hope and positive change through this scholarship! </span></p> <strong>MEGAN’S RAINBOW OF HOPE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND</strong> On August 14, 2024, the life of Megan Keleman was unexpectedly cut short. Megan was just starting her life and professional journey. She was wide eyed and full of hope striving to have a positive impact on the world in which we live. Megan helped those in need and spoke up for those who could not or were afraid to speak up.  Megan was very proud of being a CSU Viking! She obtained both her bachelor’s degree in business administration (BA) with a major of finance and master’s degree in business administration (MBA) with courses in finance from Cleveland State University. While carrying a heavy academic load as an undergraduate student and wanting to make life better for everyone on campus and in the surrounding communities, Megan was very active in student life while attending CSU. She was involved in Greek life as a founding member & President of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, became President of the Panhellenic Association, was active in student government and a contributing writer & Editor-in-Chief of CSU’s newspaper the Cauldron, and worked in the Admissions Office.  While Megan was pursuing her MBA with finance courses, she worked part-time at a non-profit organization called Shelter Care, a residential treatment program for children ages 6 to 18 who have emotional or behavioral problems, located in Tallmadge, Ohio. During this time, Megan flourished professionally and had a growing desire to pursue a career in the nonprofit industry. Due to her passion to help others and wanting to make a positive change in the lives of at-risk youth, Megan accepted a full-time position with Shelter Care in May of 2024 soon after receiving her master’s degree. In the very brief time of her budding career, Megan made a lasting and positive impact on the staff and on the youth at Shelter Care.  Megan still managed to find time to volunteer as a coach for Girls On the Run which is a program that helps girls build confidence, learn life skills, and connect with others through running. She wanted to be a positive role model for young girls and be an example of an empowered woman. Megan would teach these young girls how to succeed by pushing through tough obstacles (running a 5K or in life) and tell them that there are always people who will be there for support. The initial funding for the endowment fund is from donations raised shortly after Megan’s passing. We are very grateful for the numerous people who made generous contributions to establish the Megan’s Rainbow of Hope Endowment Fund. We welcome and greatly appreciate future contributions in any amount. Our hope is to make funds available long into the future for Cleveland State University students with a desire to make a positive impact in the field of business.  Our mission is to honor Megan’s legacy by supporting hope and positive change while spreading around kindness and happiness like confetti.

Helping Students Cross the Finish Line! <p>Helping Students Cross the Finish Line!</p> <strong>Getting to graduation. </strong>Sometimes student arrive almost at the brink of graduation only to find they've maxed out their loans and scholarships. With just one or two semesters to go, they may have to drop out, look for work, and hope to make it back some day to finish college. The odds of making it back, though, are grim: students who drop out involuntarily-even for a single semester- have only a 30% chance of coming back and earning their degrees. With CSU's Last-Mile scholarships, though, cash-strapped students don't have to drop out. They can stay, finish their studies and earn their degrees without missing a beat.<strong> Last mile scholarships award up to $3,000 per semester to full-time juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, who cannot otherwise afford college tuition and fees.</strong> In the last decade, CSU has awarded nearly 2,000 Last-Mile Scholarships. Nearly 85% of those were awarded to students who went on to graduate.

Support Ken Montlack's First Suburbs Consortium Memorial Scholarship and help Levin students! <p>Support Ken Montlack's First Suburbs Consortium Memorial Scholarship today! </p> When Ken Montlack passed away in 2023, we lost a loving family member, a good friend, a wise colleague, and a devoted community servant. Later in the summer the Northeast Ohio First Suburbs Consortium (FSC), an organization of twenty inner ring suburbs surrounding the city of Cleveland founded by Ken, awarded an FSC Ken Montlack Leadership Award and an FSC Community Program Award at a special meeting honoring Ken. Later, FSC proposed the idea of creating a scholarship in Ken’s honor for college students who are studying some form of urban or community development. Jennifer Kuzma, Director of FSC, met with members of Ken’s family, and, after speaking with a representative from Cleveland State University, we agreed to establish the Ken Montlack First Suburbs Consortium Memorial Scholarship Fund to be awarded to local students in the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. The scholarship will be used to provide emergency funds to students in need of extra help in order to stay in school.   This scholarship will be funded by contributions. The First Suburbs Consortium itself will contribute $1,500 annually, Montlack Management, Ken’s family realty company, will also contribute, and Ken’s immediate family is donating as well. We are inviting you, as someone who knew and remembers Ken in a way that makes you smile, brings up a fond memory or whose paths crossed personally or professionally, to contribute to this fund to help students who are interested in carrying on Ken’s legacy of civil and community service in the Cleveland area.  Ken believed that everyone brought something to the table – an idea, experience, or an interest in becoming a member of the group. He was welcoming, committed and used his humor to bring levity to heavy moments. Ken helped people with his law expertise, providing connections or bringing resolve to the difficulties of life. The Ken Montlack First Suburbs Consortium Memorial Scholarship will honor Ken by helping those who need it most. Cleveland State University will use these funds to provide financial assistance to Levin students who find themselves in need – maybe books are too expensive one semester or there is a one-time financial struggle that threatens their ability to complete classwork. Many of our leaders were once students working hard to meet the demands of their personal, professional, and academic lives. For many, a little assistance is needed from time to time, and it is the goal of Ken Montlack First Suburbs Consortium Memorial Fund to provide a cushion to those in need so they can later do the same for someone else. The fund needs $12,500 to get off the ground and those closest to Ken are nearly halfway there. Your generous donation of any size will help get us closer to that goal and allow for funds to be awarded to deserving students for the 2024-2025 academic year.  We thank you for your consideration. Rutar (59) passed away on May 22, 2018 at her home following a brief illness. During her time at the School of Nursing, Dr. Rutar dedicated herself to nursing education and furthering the capabilities of student nurses to ensure they were accomplished professionals when they graduated. <strong>Dr. Rutar's legacy of molding great nurses will continue to grow and prosper with your help.</strong> Dr. Rutar was an Associate Professor and the Associate Dean of Research and Collaborative Partnerships within the School of Nursing. Her clinical focus was neonates (specifically NICU), Obstetrics and Pediatrics. She held several positions in the service sector as a Registered Nurse and as a Nursing Manager in these specialty areas with the latest being at Metro Health Medical Center.  Her scholarship focused on the:<ul><li>use of technology with simulation and problem-based learning in the area of Obstetrics and Pediatrics</li><li>transition from that of student nurse to registered nurse with the provision of mentors for new graduate nurses, underwritten by HRSA with funding totaling 1.4 million over several years</li><li>and chronic disease prevention and management at the community level, which includes the Area Health Education Center (now entering its 4th year and recently refunded for an additional $475,000), and the Community Health Worker (CHW) program (now entering its 5th year, which was initially funded by HRSA, St. Lukes, and most recently, the Centers for Disease Control/Reach for almost $900,000)</li></ul> Dr. Rutar was a member of the National League for Nursing, the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society, and the Ohio League for Nursing. She also authored several journal articles and book chapters on obstetrics, pediatrics, and leadership. She had several presentations (paper and poster) at the regional and national levels.  She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was a lay minister. Her hobbies included golf, travel, friends, and family.  <strong>Dr. Rutar's legacy will continue not only through the AHEC and the CHW program, but also through this endowed scholarship in her name. Mark was born May 29, 1997 in Geauga County and grew up in Concord Township before moving to Painesville in 2019 after the birth of his son, Owen. He attended Phillips-Osborne Academy before transferring to Riverside Schools for middle and high school. Mark went on to earn a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cleveland State University in 2019 and worked at Steris designing and testing sterilizers.</strong> <strong>Mark was an accomplished motorcycle racer, two-time CRA dirt track champion, Daytona Bike Week amateur champion, and was on the podium at Amateur National championships in 2015. He also enjoyed cross country and road racing but dirt track was his passion.</strong> <strong>This scholarship is being funded because Mark believed that his racing made him a better engineer and in turn, his engineering knowledge made him a better racer. Support the next generation of rock stars! <p>Rock On For George: Support Future Rock Stars!</p> George Yunis was an enduring figure in the Cleveland rock music scene beginning in the 1970s. From fronting bands like Souvenir, Champion, Racer, and The Maxx Band to being the house band during the heyday of the iconic Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, George left an indelible mark on the city's musical landscape.  In more recent years, George continued to captivate audiences with his performances in Time Traveler, the premier Moody Blues tribute band, and That 80's band. Tragically, George's nearly five-decade-long performing career came to an end when he succumbed to cancer in October 2021 at the age of 63.  To honor his memory and passion for music, George's lifelong friend, Scott Chatham, and his twin brother, Mike Yunis, established the George Yunis Future Rock Star Scholarship. This initiative aims to provide scholarships to incoming students at Cleveland State pursuing studies in the pop/rock music track.  This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join us in commemorating George's legacy by contributing to the George Yunis Future Rock Star Scholarship. Support the CSU Canine Crew! <p>Lend a paw to support the CSU Canine Crew!</p> In the spring of 2023, the Cleveland State University Police Department joined over 300 law enforcement agencies nationwide by introducing a Therapy Dog Program. We welcomed Rune and Thor, two Labrador Retrievers who have quickly become beloved members of our community. Rune, assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit during the day, and Thor, working the night shift with the Patrol Unit, serve as our newest Viking ambassadors. They play essential roles in providing comfort and support throughout campus.  Rune and Thor have made a profound impact. They offer solace and encouragement to survivors, ease the distress of homesick students, provide stress relief during exams, and bring joy to everyone they meat. Whether through a spontaneous classroom visit, crisis intervention, or participating in campus events, these dogs embody the spirit of our Viking community.  <strong>We are reaching out to our Viking Family for support to sustain this vital program. Donations will cover the costs of food, veterinary care, and specialized vehicle equipment to ensure the well-being and effective deployment of our Canine Crew.</strong> Your generosity will ensure that our Viking ambassadors continue to receive the care and resources they need to serve our community with excellence.

Your donation today helps remove financial barriers to law students pursuing public interest careers. <p>Support unpaid & underpaid internships today!</p> The Student Public Interest Law Organization (SPILO) is hosting its 4th Annual “Live Justice” Fundraiser this year, with a goal of $10,000. The collected funds will go toward an endowed fund to provide scholarships to students who accept unpaid or underpaid internships, which will ensure Cleveland State University law students feel valued and encouraged to develop a career devoted to creating a more just system. <strong>You can help make a difference in the lives of public interest students!</strong> Please consider donating to help students that make the difficult choice to prioritize service over self. For many future students, this scholarship may be the only opportunity to supplement their income because their internship comes with a menial stipend – or none at all. <strong>Many public interest employers recognize that offering unpaid internships is not an equitable practice and have moved toward offering some compensation for students’ time and effort during the summer. Unfortunately, many of these employers are not able to pay a stipend that amounts to even minimum wage. There are a number of scholarships available to students that accept unpaid internships, but that leaves a significant gap for the students that receive a small stipend for these positions.</strong> SPILO fears the compensation disparity between law students developing public interest careers and corporate careers is discouraging public interest law students from pursuing internships tailored to their interests. The cost of a legal education is significant, and, for many students, the summer break period is a time to not only gain experience but also to earn money to cover their living expenses. While public interest students generally understand that they will not earn a salary comparable to that of a private firm, many are not in a position to take an unpaid or underpaid job because their loans and scholarships are insufficient to offset the cost of rent and other bills. This is especially true for public interest students that cannot rely on financial support from their families.  While SPILO realizes public interest careers require some financial sacrifice and creativity, SPILO believes public interest law students should feel comfortable and valued. Students that work full-time during the summer deserve to make at least a living wage to help offset their expenses – without sacrificing the opportunity to pursue their dream job. Losing public interest students to financial need is also problematic for the legal field, as we need advocates who represent marginalized and vulnerable communities for the adversarial system to function fairly. To that end, SPILO seeks to create an endowed scholarship to support not only students that pursue unpaid summer internships, but also those that accept underpaid internships. We hope to ensure that these students are paid fairly for their time and effort, and are able to make decisions for summer work based on interest and passion, rather than survival. Our mission is to provide equitable access and opportunities for all CSU students to achieve their educational and career goals and graduate from CSU. Our goal is to ensure that all students have a quality educational experience at CSU. The 25 departments and programs in the Division for Student Belonging and Success provides students a quality experience by establishing improved systemic access, wrap around support, and enrichment that will result in valuable educational opportunities, increased decisions to return to college, an increased sense of belonging, and increased graduation rates.  Our hallmark programs, Unified Academic Coaching, Living Learning Communities, TRIO (Academic wellness supports for first generation and/or low-income students), and CARE Team Management are dedicated to better supporting students experiencing crisis. Through your generous gifts we have been able to support students by meeting basic everyday needs. We’ve funded items such as: childcare, outstanding accounts, food, health and personal hygiene items, computers, and books. And, 40% of students surveyed endorsed having thought about suicide in the last year.  <strong>We are making a difference at CSU!</strong> At the <a href="https://www.csuohio.edu/counselingcenter/counselingcenter">Counseling Center</a>, we provide support and empowerment for our diverse students to overcome barriers, we help students through crises, and we connect them to resources. Our most recent data show that our students experience more suicidal thoughts than students at other university counseling centers. Our staff and our campus-wide <a href="https://www.csuohio.edu/counselingcenter/suicide-prevention">Suicide Prevention Task Force</a> are working to help prevent suicide and improve our students’ overall well-being. <strong>You can be part of the solution!</strong> Help us provide mental health resources to CSU students. To provide proper investment towards the atmosphere, aesthetics & technology of the gymnasium while maintaining the historical appreciation of the facility. <p>Support the Woodling Gymnasium Enhancement Initiative with investment towards the academic center, game day atmosphere, aesthetics & technology in the gymnasium, as well as locker room and training spaces for several CSU teams.</p><p><br></p><p> </p> As Woodling Gymnasium prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in the fall of 2023, Cleveland State Athletics has launched the <strong>Woodling Gymnasium Enhancement Initiative.</strong> The initiative is designed to raise funds in celebration of Cleveland State's historic past while embracing the Vikings' championship culture in the classroom, in the community and in competition.  Enhancements are projected to include new lighting and sound system, branding and graphics, locker room improvements for several Viking teams (including volleyball, softball, wrestling, fencing, and cross country/track & field), technology, furniture and equipment for the academic center, weight room and training room equipment and cosmetic updates, and an interactive lobby display to honor CSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductees. Individual elements will be phased throughout the course of the funding initiative, beginning with academic center improvements following the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic year. The Woodling Gymnasium Enhancement Initiative scope includes more than $1 million in total costs and has been propelled by startup gifts and pledges totaling nearly $500,000 from three generous donor families – Pete Granson and Family, Daryl and Jenniffer Deckard, and Clark Broida & Marie Kittredge. Funds raised through the initiative will be invested to provide support of Cleveland State Athletics' academic endeavors, an elevated training and competition experience for student-athletes and coaches, while also improving fan experience for game and event attendees.   Woodling Gymnasium is utilized by the volleyball, wrestling and men’s and women’s fencing teams to train and compete on a daily basis. In addition to those teams that compete inside Woodling Gymnasium, the softball, lacrosse, cross country/ track and field and swimming and diving teams all have locker room spaces inside the Physical Education building.   The Physical Education building also houses an academic center used by the majority of Cleveland State student-athletes, along with a sports medicine training room that accommodates 16 of Cleveland State’s 18 teams, and a sports performance center that is used by 270+ student-athletes on a regular basis.     Volleyball, wrestling and fencing call the Homer E. Woodling Gymnasium home. The 3,000 seat facility is located in the Physical Education Center since it's opening in 1973.  The facility has witnessed many memorable events and games from Cleveland State student-athletes including the magical 1986 men's basketball season, multiple Horizon League volleyball championship matches, eight All-Americans gracing the wrestling mats. and multiple NCAA qualifying fencers including national champ Carlo Songini gracing the strip. Your gift will support transcription of one of the nation's premier collections of oral histories about a metropolitan area. <p>Help us transcribe one of the nation's largest fully digitized, publicly available collections of oral histories about a metropolitan area. Donations will be used to train and employ CSU students and local content experts to edit and improve upon AI-generated transcriptions.</p> CSU Digital Humanities <a href="https://clevelandvoices.org">THE CLEVELAND REGIONAL ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION</a> is a community treasure. It is one of the nation's largest fully digitized, publicly available collections of oral histories about a metropolitan area. Funds will support the transcription of approximately 1,100 hours of digital recorded oral history interviews. Representing the voices of Clevelanders from all walks of life, these interviews collectively tell the story of the Cleveland region. However, without transcripts these interviews are not as fully accessible as they might be.   The Case for Transcription Transcription gives hearing-impaired users meaningful access to interview audio. It helps search engines index the content of interviews, which means more people can find and use them. Transcripts on <a href="https://clevelandvoices.org">clevelandvoices.org</a> are interactive, so users can scan through the text and, if they see something interesting, they can click to play that section of the audio file. All in all, transcribing interviews makes them more accessible, more findable, and more useful and usable.​   Our Transcription Process We've done our best to identify the most cost-effective strategy for audio transcription, combining the power of voice-recognition and artificial intelligence technologies with manual editing by content experts. Sponsorship dollars help us cover costs in the following areas: license/service fees for automated transcription tools; the hiring of qualified local professionals and CSU History students to manually edit and improve generated transcripts; and other costs related to keeping the collection and websites up-to-date.​   Sponsor an Interview Supporters of this campaign may sponsor an interview using their personal, family, or business/organizational name.
