Dr. Joan Thoman was an esteemed faculty member of Cleveland State University and the College of Nursing. She was most recently a tenured Associate Professor, an Accredited Provider Program Director for Continuing Education through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and Director of the Community Health Worker Program. She also served as an Instructor in classroom and clinical settings and as Associate Dean of Research and Collaborative Partnerships at CSU from 2018-2022. Dr. Thoman was recognized for her contributions to the field of nursing and community health through numerous awards throughout her lifetime, including the rank of emeritus faculty.

Dr. Thoman established the Dr. Joan Thoman Endowed Scholarship to help nursing students achieve their educational dreams. Dr. Thoman was a first-generation college student and had very minimal funds to pursue her education. This scholarship fund will continue her legacy by providing nursing students who have financial needs the opportunity to obtain their undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing. In addition, it will continue Dr. Thoman’s desire to help students pursue research and scholarly studies without fear and provide the means for them to be exposed to this type of work and research.
